The Uninvited: A Novel by Cat Winters

19547848

Ivy Rowan wakes up one day after being struck with Influenza. An epidemic has taken over the town and before she got sick, her father and brother had committed a terrible crime. Deep in her gut, something is telling her that it’s time for her to leave home and go out on her own in life.

Out in town, everything is in turmoil. In addition to the epidemic, soldiers are being sent to fight in the Great War overseas, dying in battle, coming back wounded, leaving behind widows and wives to fend for themselves. Ivy finds a place to board in town and seeks out a German man who was wronged by her family members-she wants, more than anything, to help him in some way.

Ivy finds herself confused, nothing is as it should be, the world is such an ugly place and she wants desperately to find beauty and warmth in it. She wants desperately to make a difference in someone’s life…But there is one terrible hitch-women in her family have always had a “gift” of seeing spirits after they have passed, right before something terrible happens to someone close to them….And she keeps seeing the spirits of the departed all around her.

What are the spirits trying to tell her? Is someone close to her in danger? Can she help enough to make a difference to someone? Can she form a connection with the German man that will give him comfort in his time of misery?

The Uninvited, by Cat Winters, is a psychological thriller sprinkled with ghosts and set in the time of the Great War. A combination of so many genres makes for an addicting and intriguing read. If you don’t like “ghost stories”, I would steer clear of this one, but if you can handle a touch of the supernatural in your reading, The Uninvited is very strange and interesting. If you like books that twist your perception and reality, The Uninvited is for you!

Wildalone by Krassi Zourkova

20483100

Thea Slavin was accepted into Princeton with exceptional piano skills without realizing that she was following in the footsteps of her long-dead sister. The mysterious sibling was kept a secret from her until she began to follow bread crumbs into the past. She promises her parents that she will leave the past alone, but when she arrives it Princeton it becomes clear that she can’t rest until she finds out what really happened, over a decade ago on that very campus.

While adjusting to the new culture, so different from her native Bulgaria, she finds herself attracted to a dark stranger who appears from shadows and the fog to tantalize her before disappearing for days on end. Following the steps her sister might have taken, talking to the professors and university staff who might remember her, Thea discovers that not everything is what it appears to be…Even the reality of the world she lives in doesn’t seem the same.

Was Thea’s sister some kind of witch, a “Wildalone” as they are known in her native Bulgaria? Did she do rituals in hopes of gaining favor from the gods? Did she believe herself to be a supernatural being? Was she losing her mind? How does the sexy stranger tie into all of the confusion? What about the creepy janitor who is always appearing to let her into locked doors?

Wildalone, by Krassi Zourkova, is a haunting story about a girl who stumbles into a dark world where the lines between fantasy and reality seem blurred, and her own sanity is questioned at every turn. Is she imagining these events and descending into madness, the path which many believe her sister took before she died and disappeared? Was someone she met every day involved in the disappearance of her sister? Who knows more than they are letting on? Will she be able to scrape through the fog and discover what is real before she meets her sister’s fate? If you like fiction that has a touch of supernatural, Wildalone is an original twist on a story that melds fantasy with the everyday.

Rogue Rider by Larissa Ione

roguerider-200x321Rogue Rider, by Larissa Ione, is Book 4 of Lords of Deliverance series, which is made up of Eternal Rider, Immortal Rider, and Lethal Rider.   The series is about the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse, (actually 3 horsemen and one horsewoman), born to bring on, or end, the Apocalypse, depending on the prophecy in play and the translators…These immortal beings have superhuman strength and very bad tempers…Not people you should mess with. As you follow the series, these unstoppable beings, one by one, learn the meaning of true love and find a more noble path to their destiny, sending a few bad guys back to hell along the way.

Rogue Rider is about Reseph, the Horseman responsible for Pestilence on earth, who goes from good to evil and back again, in a constant struggle as the power tempts him to turn to the dark side and join Lucifer in taking over heaven. He wakes up with no memory of who he is, and Jillian Cardiff finds him in the snow on her property. She helps him back to her house and feeds him, and she decides to help him figure out who he is and what he was doing out in a snowstorm. She has no idea that he is immortal or anything other than a VERY sexy stranger with amnesia. As they become friends, the sexual tension between them becomes almost unbearable, until they finally give in to the lust they share. But Lucifer is still trying to take over the world and demons are running loose on earth in the meantime. Reseph will have to figure out who he is and how to fight his own internal demons, then take down the enemy threatening his new life and his family. Can he overcome the evil once and for all?

This novel is a paranormal romance, and it definitely borders on the erotica side of the spectrum. It’s very graphic, both violently and sexually, and the language is very colorful. If you think you can handle some very sexual demons and fallen angels, this series (and Rogue Rider) will not disappoint. The audiobook format is also excellent if you like to listen to your smutty romance…But don’t drive off the road in distraction when things get steamy!

Heart of Danger by Lisa Marie Rice

Futuristic bodice-ripper? Yes, that day has come.  Dr. Catherine Young has set out to find a man named Tom McEnroe out in the middle of nowhere, where his band of secret operation soldiers known as the Ghost Ops Force. When she finds this powerful leader, she is struck by the chemistry between them, and the soldier is even more dumbfounded about his own reaction to the beautiful physician-no woman has ever been so distracting for the stoic soldier.

This novel is set more than a decade in the future, and full of gadgets and holographic communication, texting via body chip, all sorts of futuristic imaginings…One thing will stay the same, however. A bodice ripper is a bodice ripper, even when the heroine is a female physician in the future. The novel is also full of suspenseful operations, good vs. evil and the battle between those who would use science to take over the world and those who would do anything to stop the villains.

If you like science-fiction angled romance novels, or you think you might want to give this one a try, pick up Heart of Danger, by Lisa Marie Rice, and if you enjoy it, this novel appears to be the first in a series, called “Ghost Ops”.

Shadow of Night by Deborah Harkness

Diana Bishop is back in the second installment in the All Souls Trilogy-the first book of which was called A Discovery of Witches and was insanely popular among paranormal romance readers. In Shadow of Night, Diana and the sexy vampire geneticist Matthew Clairmont have time traveled back to Elizabethan England to find the famous manuscript, Ashmole 782,  that started the saga in the first novel. Diana and Matthew must get the manuscript to keep it out of the wrong hands, and every supernatural creature wants the book for his kind, and is willing to take out Diana and Matthew in the process-but the hero and heroine are determined to save the supernatural world by preserving the book and the current status quo between the species.

Christopher Marlowe, William Shakespeare, Queen Elizabeth, and MANY other historical figures make their way into the plot of the story, so if you love historical fiction, you will be tickled by the references made and the excellent attention to detail that the author, Deborah Harkness, is well-known for. If you read the first novel, you won’t want to miss the second, and if you haven’t, I suggest you start from the beginning!

Readers who enjoyed The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane, by Katherine Howe, and The Witch’s Daughter, by Paula Brackston, will love the A Discovery of Witches and Shadow of Night. Paranormal romance with a touch of history and elements of magic with hints of time travel….

Darkest London Series by Kristen Callihan

Paranormal romance lovers (you know who you are), you have probably run through Laurell K. Hamilton, Kim Harrison, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Lynsay Sands, the works…And you may even be wondering if the genre has much else to squeeze out. Kristen Callihan has written a new series, The Darkest London series, which will be a pleasant surprise. Especially if you are a lover of all things British-this series is set in London (obviously) during the Victorian era. But the London in Callihan’s series is a London ripe with paranormal beings who lurk in the shadows and hide from polite society.

The first novel in the series, Firelight, is about a young woman who marries a Lord by arrangement to settle her father’s debts…A lord who wears a mask and has a mysterious past. Can Miranda learn to love this stranger? Will she learn his secrets? Someone is murdering gentlemen in the night streets of London-is Lord Archer, her new husband, involved somehow?

The second novel in the series, Moonglow, is about a young widow who is being pursued by something dark and evil-something murderous. Women who wear her perfume are dropping dead all over the city, and a sexy nobleman has decided to help keep her safe until the demon is captured…But will Daisy be safe from him?

There are more novels to come in this series, which many readers will find addicting. If you liked Gail Carriger’s Parasol Protectorate series, you will NOT want to miss the Darkest London series by Kristen Callihan. Hachette Audio has come out with Firelight and Moonglow on Audio, as well, and those of you who enjoy listening to your paranormal romance should pick them up today-and they are steamy, so if you are prude, be warned!

God Save the Queen by Kate Locke

Paranormal Romance meets Steampunk in the first in the Immortal Empire series, staring Xandra, a Royal Guard for her majesty whose sister has just gone missing. In her determination to find out the truth, this saucy british half-vamp faces Goblins, Werewolves, Vampires, and more…And she can’t quite decide who wants her dead among them. Friends and enemies have so much in common-hunger for human flesh being on the list.

Surprise alliances shake Xandra to her core, and a discovery of a secret underground group set out to overthrow the Aristocracy, a sexy werewolf pack leader, and a very creepy Goblin prince are only the beginning of the head-spinning violence and intrigue that fills the pages of this novel.

If you loved The Parasol Protectorate series, by Gail Carriger, then without a doubt, you should pick up this novel immediately. If you think that a British “Anita Blake” sounds like something you might like to try out, the fantasy world created by Kate Locke is elaborate and well thought-out. If you are not really a fan of either “steampunk” or “paranormal romance” then it probably won’t be your “cup of tea”. Pick up God Save the Queen today, if you think you can handle it!

The audiobook is also an EXCELLENT option for those of you who like to listen to paranormal romance. I listened to it while I was painting my house and enjoyed every minute.
